It’s almost a rule – you have to get a fruity drink while vacationing at a tropical beach. I’m sure it’s written somewhere. And nothing says Hawaii quite like the Mai Tai. Sure you can go the classic route and get one at Duke’s in Waikiki, but my favorite is the one from Sam Choy’s.

Can’t hop on a jet plane to get one? No worries. I have the recipe for this wonderful libation right here!


  • 1 oz light rum

  • 1/2 oz curacao

  • 1/4 oz grenadine

  • 1 oz sour mix

  • 2 oz pineapple juice

  • 1 oz dark rum

  • garnish: wedges of pineapple, orange , & lime, and a cherry on top.

Fill 15 oz glass with ice. Add light rum, curacao, grenadine, sour mix, and pineapple juice. Stir lightly to combine. Float dark rum over the top. Throw in the cherry and add fruit wedges to rim of glass. Put one of those paper umbrellas in if you are feeling fancy. Then lay back, take a sip, and think of Hawaii!

Want to make it the size of your head? Like the Monster?  Just multiply ingredients by 3.5 and have a 53 oz glass on hand 🙂 And make sure you have extra straws!
